Meet the Company Dog

Our company dog is a guide dog in the making. We support Guide Dogs by sponsoring a puppy in training. The puppies are trained until they are about 20 months old, when they go to start work with their new permanent owner.

Dougal was our first company dog. As befits our dog, he can find fascination in the smallest things. Despite having many toys to play with, his favourite is an old plastic flower pot. Signs of Dougal's sensitive nature were apparent fairly early on, but his puppy walker worked hard with him to see if he could make the grade as a guide dog. In the end, his unhappiness with scary situations in the wide world meant that working as a guide dog was not for him.

Our new guide dog is Megan, a cute little labrador retriever cross (pictures to follow). She is still very young, but is outgoing and playful. Her fascination with playing with people's feet may need attention before she can graduate as a guide dog. Like a sensible dog, she's not very fond of the cold weather.

September 2007 - Dougal pupdate

Dougal is now 11 months old and recently took part at a Guide Dogs "Shades for the Day" event at the local school where his puppy walker works. He went into the school assembly and has made other trips to the school where he is loved by all the children and staff too!

He is fantastically obedient and now knows to stop and wait when he reaches a kerb (although he does still pull a tiny bit!) He has grown a lot recently and apparently has very long legs. He is very affectionate and loves to be with people.

The challenges for the next few weeks are going on the train and bus and learning to cope with different forms of transport. We'll let you know how that goes in the next Pupdate.
